Sea Pirates often target merchant vessels.When I boarded a passenger ship M.V.Harshavardan for PortBlair few  years back,the ship was anchored on the Hoogly River waiting for the tide.Suddenly in the wee hours of the night sirens and announcements inside the ship woke me up.Crew members were running here and there.After a while the sounds subdued..I mustered courage and went to the deck,where a crew member was sitting and smoking..I enquired about the sounds, he told me that some armed men entered the ship  using ropes and threatening with swords and broken bottles ,they broke open the store room and fled with the bundles of new big sized ropes valued more than one and half lakhs of  rupees.Security and safety measures for the passenger ships plying from the mainland to the islands also should be considered at this point of time.

JAGAN MOHINI shooting at Andaman

Actress Namitha celebrated Deepavali at the Andaman Islands, where she is busy shooting for the remake film 'Jagan Mohini'.

'Jagan Mohini', directed by Vittalacharya, was a super hit in Telugu and was dubbed in Tamil in 1978. The film had Jayamalini as the lead star.

Now, Lakshmi Movie Makers are producing the remake of this yesteryear hit with the same title and Namitha plays the role of Jayamalini. The film is being shot in the Andaman Islands. 

N K Viswanathan, who had cranked the camera for several movies besides directing a few films, directs this horror film.

The sizzling actress Namitha says, "The movie has come very good so far. All credit should go to director Viswanathan, who has taken special care in etching out the film."

In 'Jagan Mohini', Namitha shares the screen with Nila and Telugu actor Raja. Maestro Ilayaraja scores the music for this movie. A major part of the shoot is already over.

"The role offers ample scopes both for glamour and performance", she adds. 

Why it was Black and White?

For the first time, Adidas was officially appointed by FIFA to produce the balls for Mexico 1970. Adi Dassler also made up the name for the ball from the combination of two words: Television and Star (TEL-STAR), because at Mexico there would be the first live TV broadcast to Europe, South America and other countries. It had to be visible on the black and white television screens of the time, so Telstar was formed by 12 black pentagons panels and 20 white hexagons. It was the roundest ball that had been produced until then.

मालदीव को कहाँ बसाया जाए?

मालदीव के नवनिर्वाचित राष्ट्रपति मोहम्मद नशीद का कहना है कि वह अपने देश के लोगों के रहने के लिए एक नई जगह ख़रीदना चाहते हैं.

स्थान के लिए वह जिन देशों पर विचार कर रहे हैं उनमें भारत और श्रीलंका शामिल हैं.

उनका कहना है कि समुद्र के स्तर में लगातार वृद्धि से दुनिया भर के मौसम में जो बदलाव आया है उसका मतलब यही है कि मालदीव के रहने वालों को कहीं न कहीं और जा कर बसना पड़ेगा.

सफ़ेद बालू वाले तटों और ताड़ और खजूर के पेड़ों से आच्छादित हज़ारों द्वीपों और मूंगे के वृताकार द्वीप समूहों वाला देश मालदीव स्वर्ग जैसा लगता है. लेकिन यह स्वर्ग सिकुड़ता जा रहा है. साल-दर-साल इसका आकार घटता जा रहा है.

मालदीव एक ऐसा देश है जो सबसे निचले स्तर पर बसा हूआ है. उसकी जो सबसे ऊपरी ज़मीन है वह भी समुद्र के स्तर से दो मीटर ही ऊपर है.

समुद्र का स्तर बढ़ेगा

संयुक्त राष्ट्र का अनुमान है कि समुद्र का स्तर इस सदी के अंत तक 60 सेंटीमीटर बढ़ जाएगा.

मालदीव में एक हज़ार से अधिक द्वीप हैं और वह हिंद महासागर से घिरा हुआ है.

राष्ट्रपति के प्रवक्ता इब्राहिम हुसैन ज़की का कहना है कि मालदीव के सामने भविष्य के लिए दीर्घकालीन योजना पर विचार करने के अलावा और कोई विकल्प नहीं है. ज़की ने बताया कि विदेशों में ज़मीन ख़रीदने के लिए नई सरकार एक कोष बनाएगी.

मोहम्मद ज़की ने कहा, "नवनिर्वाचित राष्ट्रपति ने जिन नीतियों पर काम करने की योजना बनाई है उसमें एक है हमारे सुरक्षित कोष, हमारे राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षित भंडार को इस स्तर तक बढ़ाना ताकि वो हमारे लिए बीमा साबित हो सके. हम उसे पास के किसी देश में ज़मीन में निवेश कर सकें. ताकि जब कभी भी मालदीव और उसकी जनता को कोई ख़तरा हुआ तो उन्हें स्थानांतरित करने का विकल्प मौजूद रहे".

प्रमुख पर्यटन स्थल

ज़की ने राष्ट्रपति की योजना को जलवायु परिवर्तन के ख़िलाफ़ बीमा पॉलिसी बताया. मालदीव को पर्यटन के ज़रिए हर साल अरबों डॉलर मिलते हैं, इसलिए इस पॉलिसी का प्रीमियम जमा करना उसके लिए मुश्किल नहीं होगा.

मालदीव के राष्ट्रपति ज़मीन के लिए जिन देशों के बारे में सोच रहे हैं उनमें श्रीलंका और भारत प्रमुख हैं.

उनके प्रवक्ता ज़की ने इस बारे में कहा, "हमें हर विकल्प को परखना होगा. चाहे वो भारत हो, श्रीलंका हो या फिर दक्षिण-पूर्व एशिया का कोई देश. मुझे याद आता है किसी अंतरराष्ट्रीय अख़बार में छपा एक लेख कि ऑस्ट्रेलिया मालदीव के लोगों को पर्यावरणीय शरणार्थियों के रूप में जगह देने वाला है. अब हम ये कह रहे हैं कि हमारे सामने एक पूर्ण विकल्प होना चाहिए जो कि राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षित कोष को बढ़ाने से ही संभव होगा".

राष्ट्रपति मोहम्मद नशीद को डर है कि यदि भविष्य के लिए अभी से ही योजनाएँ नहीं बनाई गईं तो मालदीव के तीन लाख नागरिक पर्यावरणीय शरणार्थी बनने को विवश हो सकते हैं.

Bhutan crowns new King

Bhutan's fifth king was crowned after a three-year wait for an auspicious date [AFP] The Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan has crowned an Oxford-educated, 28-year-old bachelor as its new king. In an ancient ritual in the white-walled palace overlooking the Thimphu valley on Thursday, Jigme Singye Wangchuck handed his eldest son, Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck, the Raven crown which gives him the title of Druk Gyalpo, or Dragon King. The palace was packed with hundreds of foreign dignitaries, including Pratibha Patil, India's president, Sonia Gandhi, India's ruling party leader, as well as Bollywood stars. It was also surrounded by lines of jubilant locals dressed in their national costumes. The new king has been assuming the responsibilities of monarch since his father abdicated nearly three years ago in an effort to allow the "leadership of a new king and a democratic system of government". But the coronation was delayed as the century-old Wangchuk dynasty waited for astrologers to give an auspicious date. Reforms The three-day ceremony caps the former king's vision of reforming and modernising the deeply traditional and insular nation. The new king faces the challenge of balancing traditional with modern values [GALLO/GETTY] "The best time to change a political system is when the country enjoys stability and peace," the deeply revered former king, who is 52, had said when he first initiated the reform process in 2005.   "Why wait for a revolution? The new king has pledged to maintain his father's unique philosophy of improving "gross national happiness," and not common economic indicators, to ensure well-being in the country. Despite being tucked away in the Himalayas, however, the tiny nation has not been immune to modern problems such as drugs and crime, as well as potential external threats. "The changes we've had are good but there have also been less good things happening," Sonam Subha, a local trader, said. "I'm sure our king will keep us safe." The moth is named after its resemblance to a hummingbird, with its rapid hovering motion as it feeds on the nectar of  flowers.I often see this moth during this season of the year in Sikkim.

Ghajini

Ghajini is the Hindi adaptation of the critically acclaimed film Memento by Christopher Nolan, with the common theme of the protagonist suffering from anterograde amnesia or short term memory loss and seeking revenge for his wife's murder. Ghajini will feature Aamir Khan, Asin Thottumkaland Jiah Khan in lead roles and will be directed by A. R. Murugadoss, who also directed the Tamil version of the film in 2005. A. R. Rahman will be scoring the music for the film whilst Ravi K. Chandran and Anthony handle cinematography and editing of the film respectively. The film began shooting in May 2007, with songs having been shot in the Deadpan Desert of Namibia and in Cape Town, South Africa. The movie is notable for Aamir Khan having shaven his head bald. A 3d game is reportedly being produced, the release of which will coincide with the audio release. The film is scheduled to be released on 25 december 2008 and is regarded as one of the most awaited Bollywood movies of 2008.

Sanjay Ramasamy (Aamir Khan) is a rich tycoon suffering from short term memory loss due to being hit by a metal pole when trying to intervene on his girlfriend's murder. Because of the severe injury on his head, his memory can only last for fifteen minutes and he doesn't remember events or incidents that have happened before in his life. He can now only live a comprehendible life by tattooing notes on himself and taking pictures of things with a Polaroid camera to remind himself of the incidents that have happened. His story is unraveled by a police officer (Riyaz Khan) who is hunting him due to several murders he has committed while trying to find his girlfriend's murderer through his diary. His story has also piqued the interest of a medical college student, Chitra (Jiah Khan) who is searching for a patient with an "interesting" record for her college project. Chitra comes to know about Sanjay's love with Kalpana (Asin Thottumkal) a model cum activist. When her activist work for children comes in the way of child racketeers, she is killed by Lakshman when she intervened with his plan of kidnapping 25 young girls to Calcutta. So, with the help of Chitra, Sanjay sets out on a revenge spree, searching for the murderer of the one love of his life...

The film's story revolves around a rich business entrepreneur falling in love with an ad film actress. The entrepreneur and the actress fall in love, though she does not know that he is an entrepreneur. When she successfully saves a bunch of children who were in danger, she is brutally murdered by a gang leader and the entrepreneur himself gets hit hard on the head when he tries to save his lover, eventually leading him into a state of short term memory loss. He is later studied about and helped by a psychology student to take revenge on the one who murdered his lover.

For this movie Aamir Khan worked on his body for 3-4 hours daily in the gym. He weighed around 150 lbs for the role.

Do’s

Foreigners, especially to ensure to and from confirmed air tickets and accommodation in advance before proceeding to the Andaman Island to avoid immigration problems.

Foreign nationals should obtain the required permit from the immigration authorities soon after landing on the island at Airport/Harbour.

Visit the permitted areas in the Islands only.

Make use of the services of authorized tourist guides.

While driving, follow the traffic rules, keep left. Carry legal documents like driving license, permit passport etc.

Consult life guards before entering sea.

Swim in safe area only.

Keep the beaches and the environment clean.

Dispose of the garbage at proper places/dustbins and avoid plastic.

Observe decency and decorum in dress.

Avail the service of Scuba Dive instructors having certification of international/professional organizations like PADI, CMAS, NAUI, BSAC and SSI for safe diving experience.

Drive the vehicles in accordance to convoy system. Same day return by ATR is not permissible accordingly to Jarawa Policy.

On beach, parents are requested to keep an eye on your kids at all times.

Please drink sufficient water to avoid dehydration.

Please inform your location to the life guard.

Please pick up your bags and bottle while leaving the visiting spot.

Dont’s

Foreign nationals should not enter the islands without required permit.

Do not enter into restricted/tribal areas.

Do not take video, film or photographs inside Tribal Reserve areas of the indigenous tribes.

Do not carry sea fans and seashells unless specific permits are obtained from Fisheries Department.

Do not light fire in forest areas.

Do not stay on the beaches or forest during nights by putting up down tents/hammocks.

Nudity on beaches and public places is forbidden.

Do not enter the National Parks without permission.
